History

OLD HERSONISSOS

The history of Hersonissos started already in the very ancient time. Two holy stones which were found near the ancient houses show us, that in Hersonissos the first houses were built at the Neolithicum season, so on in the Achaian, Minoan, Klassicum and Byzantium till the present time. In the beginning there were many small villages and then at the time after Perikles (Ellinistiki period) has been developed a big town, the biggest of Greece.
Hersonissos became the sister town to Likto (today's Lithos Hotel Anissaras). Many famous and important men came from Hersonissos: Kiranos, who saved Ector in Troja, Fillonidis, the leader of the postmen, Nearchos, admiral of Alexander the Great e.t.c.
In the early Christian time, the Apostle Titus founded four Christian churches. 1400 a.D. an earthquake destroyed Hersonissos. Today Limani Hersonissos, Piscopiano, Koutouloufari, together with the village Hersonissos build again great tourist place.
